Breast milk is produced in the mammary glands. During pregnancy, these glands develop strongly under the influence of reproductive hormones, preparing the mother’s body for milk production after childbirth.
When a baby latches correctly and suckles, stimulation from the nipple sends signals to the brain, prompting the pituitary gland to release two key hormones: Prolactin and Oxytocin.
Prolactin plays an essential role in stimulating milk production and can also suppress ovulation. Oxytocin is responsible for the milk ejection reflex, helping milk flow out of the breast.
However, stress, anxiety, and pain can interfere with the release of prolactin and oxytocin, leading to reduced milk supply. That is why relaxation and comfort are very important for successful breastfeeding.
