Many mothers worry when their breast milk supply does not increase as expected after childbirth. In this video, we explain some common reasons why breast milk production may decrease and what mothers can do to improve it.
One possible reason is not starting breastfeeding soon after birth or feeding the baby too infrequently. When breastfeeding sessions are limited or when the baby’s latch is not correct, the stimulation needed to produce milk may decrease.
To help prevent low milk supply, it is important to begin breastfeeding as early as possible after delivery and feed the baby frequently whenever they show signs of hunger. Supporting the baby so they can latch onto both the nipple and areola properly is also essential for effective feeding.
If the baby is able to drink directly from the breast, frequent breastfeeding is recommended. However, if the baby has difficulty sucking, mothers can express milk by hand or use a breast pump to maintain milk production and continue providing breast milk for their baby.
